Railway crew capacity planning problem with connectivity of schedules
نویسنده
چکیده
We study a tactical level crew capacity planning problem in railways which determines the minimum required crew size in a region while both feasibility and connectivity of schedules are maintained. We present alternative mathematical formulations which depend on network representations of the problem. A path-based formulation in the form of a set-covering problem along with a column-and-row generation algorithm is proposed. An arc-based formulation of the problem is solved with a commercial linear programming solver. The computational study illustrates the effect of schedule connectivity on crew capacity decisions and shows that arc-based formulation is a viable approach. 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A Comprehensive Approach for Railway Crew Scheduling Problem (Case Study: Iranian Railway Network)
The aim of this study is to propose a comprehensive approach for handling the crew scheduling problem in the railway systems. In this approach, the information of different railway trips are considered as input and the problem is divided to three separated phases. In phase I, we generate all feasible sequences of the trips, which are named as the pairings. A depth-first search algorithm is deve...
متن کاملTwo Mathematical Models for Railway Crew Scheduling Problem
Railway crew scheduling problem is a substantial part of the railway transportation planning, which aims to find the optimal combination of the trip sequences (pairings), and assign them to the crew complements. In this problem, each trip must be covered by at least one pairing. The multiple-covered trips lead to impose useless transfers called “transitions”. In this study, a new ma...
متن کاملRail Crew Re-Scheduling: from Planning towards Operations
In the Dutch railway network, there are a few times per week modifications in the timetable necessary due to unexpected maintenance projects or planned maintenance project that finish later than expected. Moreover, there are about 20 disruptions per day on average. These disruptions can be caused by the infrastructure (e.g. broken switches, no power supply), the weather (e.g. longer braking tim...
متن کاملRailway Crew Rescheduling with Retiming
Railway operations are disrupted frequently, e.g. the Dutch railway network experiences about three large disruptions per day on average. In such a disrupted situation railway operators need to quickly adjust their resource schedules. Nowadays, the timetable, the rolling stock and the crew schedule are recovered in a sequential way. In this paper, we model and solve the crew rescheduling proble...
متن کاملA Column Generation Approach to solve the Crew Re-Scheduling Problem
When tracks are out of service for maintenance during a certain period, trains cannot be operated on those tracks. This leads to a modified timetable, and results in infeasible rolling stock and crew schedules. Therefore, these schedules need to be repaired. The topic of this paper is the rescheduling of crew. In this paper, we define the Crew Re-Scheduling Problem (CRSP). Furthermore, we show ...
